Happy Hour In The Heptarchy: Delicata Squash and Less-Than-Patriotic High Life

by J.R.

It’s five past 5 across Conference III (leave work early, Colorado — you have our permission), time to hit bricks and get that freakin’ weekend started, am I right?

Of course I am.

It’s been a tough week for some of you so loosen your belt, pop a top, grab a spoon and stop being such a sourpuss. III Communication’s got good news for everybody.

The Particulars

squashWhat We’re Eating: We started getting vegetables from a CSA (which is located near a lake that once had a monkey habitat) recently — and it’s not like other CSAs, which typically require a long-term commitment and pack the boxes for the customer. In this case, there’s a flat fee — $20 for the small box — and basically, it’s a pick-out-your-own situation (with some limitations).

Anyway, one of the choices last week was delicata squash. This being Tennessee and in the transitional months, we still have squash coming out of our ears, typically of the summer variety, though the winter squashes are starting to come in and we’ve enjoyed butternut in recent weeks.

Delicata is a lot like butternut in flavor, though it’s better prepared cut into rings as opposed to cubes (and it doesn’t require peeling, which is nice). There were some chicken legs around, and I found this recipe from the New York Times.

Long story short, the chicken was delicious and delicata squash should not be cooked at that time or temperature in a metal pan. Lesson learned.

What We’re Drinking: Picked up my usual case of High Life. They changed the damn cans from the patriotic ones back to the old ones. Doesn’t feel right.

Reasons To Celebrate

Chicago: Marian Hossa is still injured, but he might be back for the opener, so sayeth the Q. Meanwhile, those pesky Asian carp could be a windfall.

Your Weekend Jam: “Take Me To The River” by Talking Heads

Colorado: The Avs can stop everybody except Dallas. Weird; maybe Nathan MacKinnon is a bust. Let’s take a moment to reflect on Todd Helton, who got a horse as a gift from the Rockies, presumably because he can’t drive.

Your Weekend Jam: “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones (with a video featuring pictures of The Beatles for some reason)

Dallas: Good news — the Stars have no trouble scoring. Bad news — against the Avs. Great news: Big Tex is back!

Your Weekend Jam: “Wished I Was A Giant” by Guided By Voices

Minnesota: Did the Wild really get demonstrably worse in the off-season? Did Vikings fans really go all the way to London to watch Matt Cassel?

Your Weekend Jam: “Castles Made of Sand” by Jimi Hendrix

Nashville: The Preds consulted with an analytics dude to learn about zone entries and what have you and then they went to the Naval Academy. And Nashville’s old dump? It’s been certified as a wildlife habitat.

Your Weekend Jam: “Share The Land” by The Guess Who

St. Louis: J-Bo’s 30, Hitch is settled on his two goalies and if you do a nice thing at a Dairy Queen, Warren Buffett will call you on the phone.

Your Weekend Jam: “The Blizzard” by Jim Reeves

Winnipeg: Good news or bad news? The Jets are playing in Saskatoon.

Your Weekend Jam: “A Little Bit South Of Saskatoon” by Sonny James (duh)
