Today In History

Marcin_Zaleski_Wziecie_ArsenaluAfter he ignored the for-the-time progressive Polish constitution, the Russian-installed Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich is run out of Warsaw (in women’s clothes) as the November Uprising of 1830 kick starts the Polish-Russian War.

After running off the Grand Duke, the rebels — led by military cadets — managed to seize the city’s arsenal. Eventually, most of the generals of the Polish Army joined in, the Sejm dethroned the Tsar in Poland and a true war was on.

It took eight months, but eventually Russia — with nearly two-and-a-half as many soldiers — subdued Poland, then closed its university, with the Tsar declaring Warsaw “little more than a military garrison.”

Harsh.

Avalanche at Wild, 5 PM Central/4 PM Mountain

Records: Avalanche (17-6-0, 34 points, 3rd in Conference III); Wild (15-7-4, 34 points, 4th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Last season ended with a 3-1 Wild win over the Avs in Denver.

Last 10: Colorado 5-5-0; Minnesota 6-3-1

Historical Context: Poland and Russia spent centuries fighting over Lithuania and it looks like the Wild and Avs will spend this season fighting over one of the last three playoff spots — the Lithuania of the Western Conference.

Blackhawks at Stars, 7:30 PM

Records: Blackhawks (18-4-4, 40 points, 1st in Conference III); Stars (12-9-2, 26 points, 7th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: The Hawks won 5-2 at the AAC Nov. 9.

Last 10: Chicago 8-2-0; Dallas 7-3-0

Historical Context: Over the course of the first part of this season, it seems obvious Chicago is the better team, but both the Hawks and Stars come in to this game hot. Even the Poles were able to earn tactical victories over the Russians, despite the talent and size disparity.

Jets at Flyers, 10:30 AM

Records: Jets (12-11-4, 28 points, 6th in Conference III); Flyers (10-12-2, 22 points, 6th in SUDM)

Last Time They Met: The Jets won 3-2 in a shootout at the MTS Centre Nov. 15.

Last 10: Winnipeg 6-2-2; Philadelphia 6-3-1

Historical Context: The Poles’ momentum was sustained by an enthusiastic peasantry unaware of the ineptitude of their management. When they became aware their leadership was full of dingbats, things fell apart. Also, Winnipeg is playing in this game.

Blues at Sharks, 3 PM

Records: Blues (18-3-3, 39 points, 2nd in Conference III); Sharks (16-3-5, 37 points, 1st in Pacific)

Last Time They Met: The Sharks streaked to a 6-2 win Oct. 15 in St. Louis

Last 10: St. Louis 8-1-1; San Jose 6-2-2

Historical Context: The Poles were actually hoping for a proxy war, for their battle with the Russians to be supported in materiel and politically by Western Europe’s great powers. It didn’t work out (part of the reason the Poles took it slow was because they felt like the English would be screaming to their rescue). This game is something of a proxy war – two fine representatives of Conference III and the Pacific hooking up for Western Conference supremacy.
