Today In History

In 1845, in what was then simply a written message — instead of a made-for-TV dog-and-pony — James K. Polk laid out in his State of the Union an aggressive plan for westward expansion.

It was the U.S.’s destiny manifest — Polk called for the accession of Texas, the taking of Oregon and more or less insinuated that war with Mexico for the rest of the west was inevitable.

Let They Might Be Giants explain:

It all worked out in the end for America. Texas came around (hey Stars!) and the West joined up (‘sup Avs?) and the U.S. got pretty much all of the Oregon Territory (hey, future Seattle Metropolitans!).

Jets at Rangers, 6 PM

Records: Jets (12-12-4, 28 points, 7th in Conference III); Rangers (14-13-0, 28 points, 3rd in SUDM)

Last Time They Met: It was a 4-2 Rangers win at MSG on Where Angels Fear To Tread Day.

Last 10: Winnipeg 5-3-2; New York 5-5-0

Historical Context: Famously, during the Manifest Destiny period, some Americans wanted the border all the way up to 54°40′ North; if they’d done so and Polk tried to extend that border back east to the Great Lakes, Winnipeg would have been in northern North Dakota.

Flyers at Wild, 7 PM

Records: Flyers (12-12-2, 26 points, 5th in SUDM); Wild (15-8-5, 35 points, 4th in Conference III )

Last Time They Met: The Flyers were all over the Wild 5-1 on Jan. 17, 2012.

Last 10: Philadelphia 7-2-1; Minnesota 5-4-1

Historical Context: Philadelphia is touring Conference III, having picked up wins against Winnipeg and Nashville. With a win against Minnesota, they might decide it’d be a good idea to join Conference III. Like how Texas fought a big old war to get independence from Mexico just get unindependent and join the U.S..

Blues at Kings, 9:30 PM

Records: Blues (18-4-3, 39 points, 2nd in Conference III); Kings (16-7-4, 36 points, 3rd in Pacific)

Last Time They Met: Playoffs.

Last 10: St. Louis 7-2-1; Los Angeles 5-1-4

Historical Context: Is there anything more Manifesty Destinyish than St. Louis playing hockey in Los Angeles? (No.)
