Great Game Previews In History: 12 December 2013

Today In History

On December 12, 1098, Crusaders led by Raymond de Saint Gilles and Bohemond of Taranto negotiated the surrender of the city of Ma’aara in what is now Syria. The city had been under siege for two weeks.

Upon the surrender of the townspeople, the Crusaders immediately began a slaughter (that’s like fighting someone who doesn’t want to fight, Ray Emery).

But alas, those silly Crusaders took a city that wasn’t nearly as rich as they thought. While some negotiations were going on, the soldiers had to wait in this desolate Detroit of the Desert and eventually started eating dead people, leading historian Albert of Aix to say “Nam Christiani non solum Turcos vel Sarracenos occisos, verum etiam canes arreptos” (“the Christians did not shrink from eating not only killed Turks or Saracens, but even dogs”).

Even dogs, you guys. Even dogs.

Stars at Predators, 7 PM

For full coverage of the Chambers Pot/Conference III Championship Belt Title Match, check out the Tale of the Tape.

Avalanche at Jets, 7 PM/6 PM Mountain

Records: Avalanche (20-9-0, 40 points, 4th in Conference III); Jets (14-14-4, 32 points, 6th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Paul Statsny scored the game winner in a 3-2 Avs win in Denver October 27.

Last 10: Colorado 6-4-0; Winnipeg 4-4-2

Historical Context: If there’s a place that knows about eating its young, its Winnipeg. Having moved into to a new city, they found the riches of their hockey team were lacking and now, like the cannibalizing soldiers, they look for someone to blame. Is it Claude Noel or Kevin Cheveldayoff? Is it Ondrej Pavalec? If you’re a blogger, maybe. If you work for one of the Winnipeg papers, it’s Dustin Byfuglien or Evander Kane, two guys who have nothing obvious in common, right? Right?

Maple Leafs at Blues, 7 PM

Records: Maple Leafs (16-13-3, 35 points, 5th in Flortheast); Blues (20-6-3, 43 points, 2nd in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: The Leafs won 3-2 in a shootout way back on November 10, 2011.

Last 10: Toronto 3-5-2; St. Louis 7-3-0

Historical Context: The visiting Leafs know a little bit about stubbornness and stubbornness led to all the cannibalism here. After taking control of the city, Bohemond seized control of the walls and towers and Raymond of Toulouse took control of the town proper, part of a long fight over who was to rule the conquered territories. It was while these two dingbats were away, negotiating their power struggle, that people started to eat people (and dogs).

Wild at Sharks, 9:30 PM

Records: Minnesota Wild (18-10-5, 41 points, 3rd in Conference III); Sharks (19-6-6, 44 points, 3rd in Pacific)

Last Time They Met: Mikko Koivu got the winner in a 3-1 Wild win in St. Paul December 8.

Last 10: Minnesota 4-5-1; San Jose 6-3-1

Historical Context: All of this was part of the Crusaders march to Jerusalem (indeed, after the eating of the people and dogs, the knights got restless and started destroying the town, forcing their leaders to get them something else to do, like march on to Jerusalem). This trip is a bit of an odyssey for the Wild. This is the second of three games out west, they’ll come home for one and then go back out for a four more.
