III Hundred and 60 Minutes: 4 January 2014

by J.R.

Today is one of the great days — a day in which its possible, what with the Game Center Live or the Center Ice or streaming radio or sketchy dot-two-letter-country-code not-technically allowed by Homeland Security online feeds, to spend all day watching Conference III hockey.

Are you up to the challenge? Can you go noon to 9:30 and catch all or part of all six games?

Send us proof and you win a prize!*

Jets at Bruins

Records: Jets (19-19-5, 43 points, 6th in Conference III); Bruins (27-12-2, 56 points, 1st in Flortheast)

Last Time They Met: The Jets won 3-1 on March 19.

Last 10: Winnipeg 5-5-0; Boston 6-4-0

Something’s got to be the first game and it might as well be this one. Enjoy brunch and your day-booze of choice as the Jets play the middle game of a three-game roadie in Boston. The Bruins got the extra point off Nashville from a Brad Marchand OT winner Thursday and look for another win against Conference III this afternoon.

2 PM (1 Mountain)

Sharks at Avalanche

Records: Sharks (26-9-6, 58 points, 2nd in Pacific); Avalanche (25-11-4, 54 points, 3rd in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: It took a shootout Dec. 23, but the Sharks won it 5-4 in San Jose.

Last 10: San Jose 7-3-0; Colorado 4-2-4

A compelling mid-afternoon match-up here, well worth switching over from the Winnipeg game early for. Sip some cold ones and see if the Avs can slow the offensive juggernaut that is Bracken Kearns.

6 PM

Predators at Panthers

Records: Predators (18-18-5, 41 points, 7th in Conference III); Panthers (15-20-6, 36 points, 7th in Flortheast)

Last Time They Met: Nashville took a 4-3 home win Oct. 15.

Last 10: Nashville 4-4-2; Florida 6-3-1

Enjoy an aperitif of apple pie moonshine, ginger ale and a few nails as the Preds square off against an old friend for the first time. Watch long enough to see if Pete Weber and Terry Crisp interview Coach Horachek.

7 PM

Blue Jackets at Blues

Records: Blue Jackets (18-19-4, 40 points, 7th in SUDM); Blues (28-7-5, 61 points, 2nd in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: David Backes scored in OT to give St. Louis a 4-3 win over the Jackets, who are not in Conference III.

Last 10: Columbus 5-4-1; St. Louis 7-1-2

The Blues are 13-0-1 against their Conference III brethren and would be the only holder of the belt, if — as some have suggested —it could not be lost in a shootout. Nathan Horton is back for the Jackets. I hope he was able to go to the zoo while he was injured.

Red Wings at Stars

Records: Red Wings (18-14-10, 46 points, 5th in Flortheast); Stars (20-13-7, 47 points, 4th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Rich Peverley got the OT winner in a 4-3 Stars victory Nov. 7 in the Motor City.

Last 10: Detroit 3-5-2; Dallas 6-2-2

Losing to Detroit is the worst and that’s why only one Conference III team has done it. This may be the most compelling of the 7 PM starts, which is kind of a crappy slate to be honest.

Capitals at Wild

Records: Capitals (20-15-6, 46 points, 2nd in SUDM); Wild (21-17-5, 47 points, 5th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Nicklas Backstrom got the shootout winner past Josh Harding and that was no way confusing in a 3-2 Caps win.

Last 10: Washington 3-3-4; Minnesota 3-7-0

The Wild probably saved Mike Yeo’s job in beating Buffalo and now they come in facing another team desperate for a win. Could be ugly.
