Great Game Previews In History: 7 January 2014
Today In History
Galileo Galilei (GaIIIeo GaIIIei?) observed the four moons of Jupiter we now call the Galilean moons. He named them the Cosmian Sidera initially (for Cosmo d’Medici) and then changed the name to the Medicean Sidera (for the whole family). He never accepted their commonly used names — Ganymede, Io, Callisto and Europa — and called the moons Jupiter I, Jupiter II and so on.
In any case, Galileo’s discovery pretty well disproved the prevailing geocentric Ptolemaic model of the universe — ya know, because if something was orbiting something else, then not everything is orbiting the earth.
Sharks at Predators, 7 PM
Records: Sharks (27-10-6, 60 points, 2nd in Pacific); Predators (18-19-6, 42 points, 7th in Conference III)
Last Time They Met: Viktor Stalberg had one of each and Nashville topped San Jose 3-2 (a high-scoring affair for these two teams) Dec. 14.
Last 10: San Jose 7-3-0; Nashville 2-5-3
Historical Context: It would be very hard to survive on Io with its high number of volcanoes and its sulfur dioxide atmosphere. It would require a lot of preparation and a lot of luck. Survival and success would depend on all the variables firing simultaneously. And the loss of one key part could dash the whole operation.
Lightning at Jets, 7 PM
Records: Lightning (25-13-4, 54 points, 3rd in Flortheast); Jets (19-21-5, 43 points, 6th in Conference III)
Last Time They Met: Mark Scheifele got the OT winner for the Jets, a 2-1 win Dec. 7.
Last 10: Tampa Bay 7-2-1; Winnipeg 4-6-0
Historical Context: Which one is the ice one? Europa? Winnipeg is Europa.
Blues at Oilers, 8:30 PM
Records: Blues (29-7-5, 63 points, 2nd in Conference III); Oilers (14-26-5, 33 points, 7th in Pacific)
Last Time They Met: The Blues went for six in a shutout in Edmonton Dec. 21.
Last 10: St. Louis 7-1-2; Edmonton 3-5-2
Historical Context: Ganymede is the most stable, most capable of sustaining life. We don’t really know, of course, just as we never really know what the Blues are going to do until they do it. But it looks as good as anywhere else.
Wild at Kings, 9:30 PM
Records: Wild (22-17-5, 49 points, 5th in Conference III); Kings (26-13-4, 56 points, 3rd in Pacific)
Last Time They Met: The Kings won 3-2 in the shootout waaaaaay back on Oct. 3.
Last 10: Minnesota 4-6-0; Los Angeles 4-6-0
Historical Context: Callisto was maybe-kinda supposed to be a place that could support life. There were reasons to believe it might be more easier to live there because its the farthest from Jupiter. But no, Callisto looks shammier every time there’s a flyby. Anyway, the Wild have been passed by Dallas.
