Today In History

450px-Rimini088In 49 BC, Julius Caesar takes his Legio XIII Gemina across the Rubicon River, essentially starting a civil war and famously saying “Alea iacta est” — “the die has been cast.”

Commanders were not allowed to lead their armies out of the northern Cisalpine Gaul provinces into y proper in the south, a proscription made by the Senate ostensibly to prevent a coup d’etat.

Caesar knew what he was doing. His actions kickstarted the civil war between his supporters — the Populares— and those of the Senate and Pompey, the more conservative and traditionalist set.

Stars at Rangers, 6 PM

Records: Stars (20-16-7, 47 points, 5th in Conference III); Rangers (22-20-3, 47 points, 5th in SUDM)

Last Time They Met: Henrik Lundqvist made 41 saves (including 23 in the first period) to pace a 4-1 Rangers win Nov. 17.

Last 10: Dallas 4-4-2; New York 6-3-1

Historical Context: Caesar’s invasion was, frankly, a little desperate. He’s been up there in Gaul, invading countries without Senate approval and more or less acting like a dictator already, He was almost certainly going to be arrested when he returned to Rome, so why not go for broke and try to take the whole thing over? Despite a run of bad play — 19 GA in four games — the Stars don’t need to get Caesar-level desperate and blow up the whole operation. They just need to stop giving up five goals a game. Easy!

Islanders at Avalanche, 7 PM Mountain/8 PM Central

Records: Islanders (16-22-7, 39 points, 8th in SUDM); Avalanche (27-12-4, 58 points, 3rd in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Kyle Quincey scored in overtime in a 4-3 OT win for the Avs in November of 2011..

Last 10: New York 7-3-0; Colorado 5-2-3

Historical Context: From the beginning, the Senate’s strategy was disjointed. Pompey thought Caesar had three legions — not one — and gave up the city because he thought it couldn’t be defended against such overwhelming force. But deception is the art of war and all that So maybe, yeah, the Avs are playing above their heads. Maybe they only have one legion. Pompey’s still running scared.

Blues at Canucks, 9 PM

Records: Blues (31-7-5, 67 points, 1st in Conference III); Canucks (23-13-9, 55 points, 4th in Pacific)

Last Time They Met: Vancouver won 3-2 in OT on October 25 in St. Louis

Last 10: St. Louis 9-0-1; Vancouver 3-3-4

Historical Context: All Caesar wanted to be was consul. He’d already been proconsul and governor; he just wanted was coming to him.

The Blues are already Conference III Championship Belt holders and already lead the power rankings, but they wanted to lead the standings. They’re up on the tiebreaker but a win tonight gives them the lead by their lonesome.
