Today In History
In 1377, Pope Gregory XI returned to Rome, ending the Avignon Papacy (er, sort of; Gregory — French by birth — didn’t last long in Rome and rival conclaves elected separate successors and there were two sets of popes, one of which was at Avignon).
The Popes had been in Avignon since 1309, when the Cardinals fled Rome, tired of being pushed around by powerful neighboring nobles (a group in red flees because its power is slipping; sounds familiar).
The final step in the return to Rome was fighting the War of the Eight Saints, which is a super-complicated situation and which I only mention because that’s a helluva name for a war.
