Today In History

Thompsons_Switchback_Railway_1884LaMarcus Adna “L.A.” Thompson receives a patent for the roller coaster, one of 30 patents he was granted for gravity-type rides.

Thompson was indeed known as the Father of Gravity, which is a pretty overornate title, but here we are.

He certainly didn’t “invent” gravity (Isaac Newton invented gravity, right?) and he didn’t invent the roller coaster (tracked thrill-rides had existed since the 17th century and old mine railroads were being operated as such in the 1820s), but he certainly perfected them.

In a way, L.A. Thompson is a lot like Conference III — we didn’t even hockey, but we’re the ones who’ll make you nauseous perfected it.

Stars at Predators, 7 PM

Records: Stars (21-19-8, 50 points, 5th in Conference III); Predators (21-22-7, 49 points, 6th in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Erik Cole got the winner as Dallas wrested back the Chambers Pot 4-1 Dec. 27.

Last 10: Dallas 2-7-1; Nashville 3-4-3

Historical Context: Been a bit of a roller coaster for these two teams, but somebody has to win! Right? The winner takes the Chambers Pot, the loser takes Obscene Alex’s Crown of Fecal Matter.

Blues at Red Wings, 6:30 PM

Records: Blues (32-10-5, 69 points, 2nd in Conference III); Red Wings (21-17-10, 52 points, 5th in Flortheast)

Last Time They Met: The Blues eked out a 1-0 win against Detroit April 10.

Last 10: St. Louis 7-3-0; Detroit 4-5-1

Historical Context: L.A. Thompson’s big innovation was putting scenery in tunnels, something everybody just had to copy.
