Today In History

429px-King_Henry_V_from_NPGSix hundred and one years ago, Henry V accedes to the throne of England.

He is remembered for being a bit of a “riotous youth” and a “scapegrace,” in part due to the immortalization of Shakespeare, though there is very little in the actual, non-Shakesperean record to support this, but after six centuries it’s unlikely we’ll remember him any other way.

Hurricanes at Blackhawks, 7 PM

Records: Hurricanes (30-30-9, 69 points, 7th in SUDM); Blackhawks (40-15-15, 95 points, 2nd in Conference III)

Last Time They Met: Patrick Sharp scored the shootout winner in a 3-2 Chicago victory October 15.

Last 10: Carolina 4-6-0; Chicago 5-4-1

Historical Context: Oh, youth! How you were fulsome in Henry and how you are fulsome in Teuvo Teravainen! Henry was never meant to be king — and Teuvo was never meant to be the star of his 2012 draft, but both are at great heights now!

Predators at Flames, 8 PM

Records: Predators (29-31-10, 68 points, 7th in Conference III); Flames (28-34-7, 63 points, 6th in Pacific)

Last Time They Met: It was the Eric Nystrom game.

Last 10: Nashville 3-7-0; Calgary 6-4-0

Historical Context: Henry, at his birth, would have been a rival claimant, just as Calle Jarnkrok, due to make his Predators debut tonight, was a rival when he entered the league.
