Great Game Previews In History: Get Boozy on Repeal Day

by J.R.

Today In History

prohibition_ends_repeal_day_cocktailsEighty years ago today, three states — Pennsylvania, Ohio and Utah — approved the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, repealing the 18th Amendment and, ergo, Prohibition.

“What America needs now is a drink,” President Roosevelt famously declared, as if America hadn’t been drinking all along during the 13 years of allegedly booze-free America, hooch being readily available and people being willing to ignore the law.

It’s interesting that Utah gets the credit as the final state needed to ratify the 21st, since two states with far more influence and far bigger footprints did the same contemporaneously. Utah is likely remembered as the turning-point state because it makes for a more interesting story that a state which, to this day, places bizarre restrictions on the sale of alcohol is, in fact, the one that made it legal to drink again.

Heat Index: The Comprehensive Guide to All 21 Conference III Rivalries

by J.R.

Here we are.

After staring awkwardly at each other for a few months, laughing with and at one another, back-slapping and guffawing, being mirthful and merry, the season is now in our sights.

It’s time to hate.

There are 21 rivalries in Conference III — some old, some new, some borrowed, some involving the Jets (not many).

Which have the most heat in this historic first season? Our crack team of researchers using the scientific method (“scientific method”=thinking about it for a few minutes) have ranked all 21.

Some caveats:

1) The old Central Division is over-represented at the top and Winnipeg and Colorado, especially, are over-represented at the bottom. This will be hard to swallow for Jets fans, but we just don’t care about you yet.

2) Historical factors related to the old North Stars and old Jets were considered when necessary.

3) Teams are given in the order I thought of them when I wrote the list. By all means, consider word order a slight against your team.

4) Feel free to disagree and call me stupid. I don’t care, because you are wrong.

Starting at the bottom…

Happy Hour In The Heptarchy: Pasties & Scrumpy

by J.R.

It’s five past 5 across Conference III (leave work early, Colorado — you have our permission), time to hit bricks and get that freakin’ weekend started, am I right?

Of course I am.

It’s been a tough week for some of you so loosen your belt, pop a top, grab a spoon and stop being such a sourpuss. III Communication’s got good news for everybody.

III Four Time

by J.R.

Over at Puck Daddy, Wysh and the gang asked readers to submit “their choices for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proxies for all 30 NHL teams” [East here, West there].

It’s a fun idea and appeared to be well-executed until Colin Wilson was declared Nashville’s Donatello. Donatello — the brainy one — has as much to do with Colin Wilson — who confuses Santa’s reindeer with the planets of the solar system — as I do with J.R. Smith.

Therefore, naturally, we are assigning Conference III proxies for famous (?) quartets from history. Feel free to disagree.

Cover Bands: III Communication’s NHL 14 Cover Vote Endorsements

by J.R.

Voting begins today for the cover dude for EA Sports NHL ’14. As per tradition, the company has called upon fans to make the choice, employing a voting system more complicated than the way the Republic of Venice chose the doge.

As a public service, III Communication is providing this voters’ guide (with helpful cover songs!) for the teams in Conference III — you have to vote for the rest of the teams, too, but we’ll let your conscience be your guide deciding between Brian Campbell and Kris Versteeg.
